INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES

Foaming bath butter (a.k.a whipped soap base)

Foaming bath butter is a gentle soap base that’s perfect for whipping. It’s mild and won’t irritate your skin, and it feels creamy while creating a beautiful foam. Plus, it’s packed with glycerin, which makes it moisturizing.

I’ve been using this amazing foaming bath butter for years and it’s one of my favorite ingredients. I’ve even shared multiple body scrub recipes that use it:

Sugar

You can use any white sugar for this recipe. I do, however, recommend, purchasing a fine grain sugar. Finer grain sugar feels more gentle and exfoliates better.

Colorant

To make the colorful mermaid look, you will, of course, need some sort of colorant.

So what can you use to color sugar scrubs?

To color your homemade sugar scrubs, you can use either a soap dye or mica powder. Both options are skin safe and will produce beautiful colors. Mica powder will produce a more shimmery color. I’m using mica powder for this recipe.

Scent

When you’re creating your own mermaid sugar scrub, you definitely want to add a little scent-sational touch to make it extra special! That’s why I recommend using an ocean breeze fragrance oil to give it that perfect mermaid vibe.

That’s all! You only need these four ingredients to make the sugar scrub.

Melt & Pour soap for mermaid tails

Optionally you can make mini mermaid tail soaps or shells to decorate the sugar scrub.

These adorable soap decorations are super easy to make with just 30 g of melt & pour base and a mini mermaid mold.

And the best part?

You can use the same scent and colorants as your sugar scrub to tie everything together seamlessly!  You can use both white or transparent melt & pour soap. White base will make more pastel colors. 

MERMAID SUGAR SCRUB RECIPE

Before I go into ingredients, I want to mention that this scrub is thick and a little bit goes a long way. I like my scrubs this way because they are more exfoliating. It uses the same ingredients but shows you how you can make a whipped, creamy, pipped version of this scrub 🙂 

I also want to mention that the consistency and creaminess of the scrub can vary based on the batch of foaming bath butter. So add your sugar little by little before you get the consistency that you like to avoid adding too much.

This recipe makes approx. 25 oz / 700 ml of sugar scrub.

» 7 oz / 200 g of foaming bath butter

» 21oz / 600 g of white sugar (preferably fine grain) 

» 0.05 oz / 1.5 g of Ocean Breeze fragrance oil

» purple, green and blue soap dye or mica powder.

» an electric hand mixer

» a large mixing bowl to whip bath butter in

» 2 smaller bowls for different colors

 

Additionally, to make mini mermaid tails, you will need:

» melt & pour soap base for mini mermaid tail soap – approx. 30 g of soap per one mini soap

» mini mermaid tail silicone mold

» small heatproof container to melt soap

» A small spray bottle with rubbing alcohol

 

STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL ON HOW TO MAKE MERMAID SUGAR SCRUB

Weigh 7 oz / 200 g of foaming bath butter and add it to a large mixing bowl. Break it up in smaller chunks if needed.

Take your electric hand mixer and start whipping the foaming bath butter. You need to whip for 5-8 minutes. You will see the volume of the soap increasing like in the photo below.

Add sugar and mix with spatula.

Separate your sugar scrub into 3 equal parts. Add mica powder or liquid soap colorant in each bowl (purple, blue ,green) and combine. 

Start scooping your homemade sugar scrub into a jar (I used 17 oz / 500 ml jar). Mix up the free colors to make it fun.

For creating the mini mermaid tail soap, start by cutting about 1 oz / 30 g of melt & pour soap into small pieces. Then, transfer the soap chunks into a small heatproof container and heat it in the microwave on low power using 5-10 second intervals. This approach is necessary to prevent overheating and burning the soap.

Once the melted soap is ready, you need to work fast since small quantities of melted soap can solidify rapidly.

Before pouring the melted soap into the mold, spray it with alcohol to prevent air bubbles from forming. Afterwards, pour the soap into the mold and spray some more alcohol on top to avoid soap bubbles.

Don’t worry if you pour over the mold like I did. This can be easily fixed with a knife after the soap solidifies.

Leave the soap to solidify for a couple of hours.

For a shimmery effect on the mermaid tail, apply mica powder by using a brush or your finger to spread it over the soap. For example, I used purple mica and combined it with green for an appealing look.

Hooray! With the mermaid tail all set, it’s time to adorn your homemade mermaid sugar scrub with it. Add the finishing touch and voila, you’re done!

For mermaid tail soap

• melt & pour soap base - approx. 30 g of soap per one mini soap
• mini mermaid tail silicone mold
• small heatproof container to melt soap
• A small spray bottle with rubbing alcohol

Instructions

1. Place your foaming bath butter into a large mixing bowl and start whipping with an electric hand mixer. 

2. Whip for 5-8 minutes, then add fragrance oil and whip for another 2 minutes.

3. Add sugar and mix with spatula.

4. Separate your sugar scrub into 3 parts. Color each part with a different color of soap dye or mica powder.

5. Scoop your colored sugar scrubs into a jar. Layer and mix the colors to make it fun.

6. To make mini mermaid soaps, melt melt & pour soap in microwave on low power using 5-10 second intervals.

7. Once fully melted, remove from microwave, add mica powder and mix.

8. Spray mermaid mold with alcohol, pour your colored melt & pour soap and spray some more alcohol on top to prevent ir bubbles. Leave the soap to solidify in room temperature for about 2 hours.

10. Paint some mica powder on your soap with a brush or a finger. Then decorate your homemade sugar scrub with it.,
